Liggett Group
Liggett Tobacco, formerly known as Liggett and Meyers Tobacco Company. It's headquarters are located in Durham, North Carolina. Its CEO is Bennett LeBow , who was described by the Wall Street Journal in 2003 as one of America's worst top 10 CEOs.
During the 1995-1996 time period, the company attempted a David vs. Goliath takeover of the much larger R.J. Reynolds tobacco company, which ended in failure. In 2004, LeBow was said to be exploring the possibility of consolidating smaller industry players. Rumored takeover targets were S&M brands, Xcaliber International , and Dosal Tobacco Company of Miami, Florida.
