The name Liparidae has also been applied in the past to the tussock moth family of Lepidoptera, which includes the injurious gypsy moth. Certain encyclopedia web-sites indicate Liparidae is still the correct name, but this appears to be an error. In 1984 the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 41: 227-230 - Opinion 1283) gave Lymantriidae Hampson, nomenclatural precedence over Orgyiidae Wallengren, 1861 and Dasychiridae Packard, 1864 (Insecta, Lepidoptera), placing Liparidae Boisduval, 1834 on the Official Index of rejected names.
