List of Arabian Houses

This is a list of the major Houses, or tribes, of the Arabian Peninsula in the 20th century.

  • House of Saud, became dominant through an alliance with the Wahhabies. Now rules Saudi Arabia.
  • House of Hashim, evicted from Saudia Arabia in 1926 but moved north and controlled Iraq until 1958 and still controls Jordan.
  • Shammar one of the largest Arabian tribes based in the northeast they battled the Saud's into the 1920s.
  • House of Mutayyir close ally of the Shammer and met the same fate.
  • House of Harb based in the Hijaz are now only a minor power after being defeated by the Saudis and their allies.
  • House of Banu Khalid based in Hasa were also defeated by the Saudies.
  • House of al-Sheikh long a close ally of the Saudis, have risen along with them.
  • House of Sudayris traditionally the house where Saudies draw their wives. Has remained a close ally of the House of Saud.
  • House of Thunayyan the administrators and closest allies of the Ottoman Empire, they switched allegiances and are now close allies of the Saudies.
  • House of Rashid rulers of Ha'il , members of the Shammar tribe. Defeated by Ibn Saud in 1921.
