List of California State Routes
Below is a partial list of California State Routes (typically abbreviated SR). All State Routes are defined and described by law through California's Streets and Highways Code (Sections 300-635). The code makes no distinction between State Routes, InterState Routes and United States highways; thus, Interstate 5 is legally Route 5. [1] [2] For the most part, Interstates and US highways are not listed here, though there are a few cases, e.g. Interstate 110 and California State Route 110 or Interstate 15 and California State Route 15 where the numbered State Route extends beyond the interstate.
These designations originated in 1963-1964, when California adopted a route numbering policy for highways under state control. The policy established a comprehensive route numbering system such that, in most cases, any given number applies to a single continuous route, whether it is an Interstate, a U.S. Highway or a State Route.
Many California highways have strange discontinuities in terms of the legal definition of their routes, which are not always accurately reflected in signage or maps. This is because the system was once much larger and complex than it is today; it included many minor rural highways that have since grown into urban boulevards as California cities sprawled outwards during the 20th century. Since the 1990s, Caltrans has pursued a policy of relinquishing many urban non-freeway routes to the cities which they run through. The problem is that not all cities have been prepared to accept such highways from Caltrans simultaneously, so many highways are being decommissioned from the state system one fragment at a time.
