New stadiums

Several of the above stadiums have been built or completely redeveloped in the last few years. Those clubs which have moved into new grounds since the 1980s include:

1988 Scunthorpe United
1990 Walsall, Wycombe Wanderers
1991 -
1992 Chester City
1993 Millwall
1994 Huddersfield Town, Northampton Town
1995 Middlesbrough
1996 -
1997 Bolton Wanderers, Derby County, Stoke City, Sunderland
1998 Reading
1999 Wigan Athletic
2000 -
2001 Bournemouth (stadium completely rebuilt in situ) Oxford United, Southampton
2002 Hull City, Leicester City
2003 Darlington, Manchester City (stadium first used for 2002 Commonwealth Games)
2004 -

Prior to 1988, the last new League football ground in England was Roots Hall , Southend, which was opened in 1955. The amount of new money coming into the game from sources such as the Football Trust , and the requirements for more modern stadiums created by the Taylor Report, are the most likely causes for the increase in stadium building.

Future stadiums

Stadiums which are currently in development, and are likely to open in the near future, include:
