List of Succession to the Belgian Throne

Belgium uses full cognatic primogeniture; since 1991 males and females have equal rights of succession but this only counts for the offspring of King Albert II, effectively barring the female descended offspring of Leopold II, Albert I and Leopold III from the throne. Prior to 1991 Belgium used Salic law.

  2. HRH Princess Elisabeth of Belgium (eldest daughter of Prince Philip)
  3. HRH Prince Gabriel of Belgium (eldest son of Prince Philip)
  4. HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium (eldest daughter of King Albert II)
  5. Amadeo of Habsburg-Lorraine , Prince of Belgium, Prince Imperial and Archduke of Austria-Este, Prince Royal of Hungary and Bohemia (eldest son of Princess Astrid)
  6. Maria Laura of Habsburg-Lorraine , Princess of Belgium, Princess Imperial and Archduchess of Austria-Este, Princess Royal of Hungary and Bohemia (eldest daughter of Princess Astrid)
  7. Joachim of Habsburg-Lorraine , Prince of Belgium, Prince Imperial and Archduke of Austria-Este, Prince Royal of Hungary and Bohemia (son of Princess Astrid)

  11. HRH Princess Louise of Belgium (daughter of Prince Laurent)

Some scolars are maintaining that Prince Alexander, born 1942, (eldest son of King Leopold III's second marriage and half brother to King Albert II) is still legally in line to the throne (currently 12th) but the public generally acknowledges that the descendants of this second marriage have no right to the throne. Given the fact that Prince Alexander is childless, this issue is somewhat moot.
