Major Basilicas

There are only five major basilicas, all in Rome:

• St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the Pope, the Patriarch of Rome
• St. Peter's Basilica is assigned to the Patriarch of Constantinople
• St. Paul outside the Walls is assigned to the Patriarch of Alexandria
• St. Mary Major was formerly assigned to the Patriarch of Antioch
• St. Lawrence outside the Walls is assigned to the Patriarch of Jerusalem

Minor Basilicas

The majority of basilicas are termed "minor basilicas". Some of these basilicas are also cathedrals (seats of dioceses).
