List of cities in South Korea
The largest cities in South Korea have self-governing status equivalent to that of provinces. Seoul, the largest city and capital, is classified as a Teukbyeolshi (Special City), while the next 6 largest cities (see the list below) are classified as Gwangyeokshi (Metroplitan Cities; see Special cities of Korea). Smaller cities are classified as shi ("cities") and are under provincial jurisdiction, at the same level as counties (see Administrative divisions of South Korea).
Self-governing cities with the status of provinces (1998 populations):
- Seoul Special City (서울) (16 million)
- Busan Metropolitan City (부산) (12.5 million)
- Daegu Metropolitan City (대구) (3.5 million)
- Incheon Metropolitan City (인천) (7.5 million)
- Gwangju Metropolitan City (광주) (3.4 million)
- Daejeon Metropolitan City (대전) (5.3 million).
- Ulsan Metropolitan City (울산) (2~3 million).
All of the above cities except Ulsan have metro (subway) systems either in operation or under construction.
