Richmond station (the gateway to the city for all eastern lines) has had several incarnations:

- Swan Street low level (12 December 1859 - 1885)
- Richmond high level (1885 - 26 March 1960) - the opening of this station overlapped with the closure of Swan Street
Also, Melbourne's two central stations were, or are being rebuilt:
- First Flinders Street Station (built 1854) - originally Melbourne Terminus
- Current Flinders Street Station (built 1910)
- Spencer Street Station (built 1859) - originally Batman's Hill Station
- Spencer Street Station is currently being rebuilt, and will be known as Southern Cross Station when the redesign is completed
