Keith Richards long time manager Jane Rose convinced Keith to record the final concerts of his first ever solo tour. In support of Talk is Cheap, Richards and his band, named The X-pensive Winoes because of their choice of champagne as studio beverage, played two dates in Los Angeles at the end of December, 1988. The Hollywood Palladium was the club on Sunset Strip where in 1972 Chuck Berry threw Keith off stage when the young Rolling Stone tried to jump up and play with his idol. Berry later claimed he did not recognize it was Richards.

Sessions

Jane Rose quickly set up audio and video equipment in the theatre when Keith belatedly agreed to the recording. However, when the taping happened, there was no intention for it to be released commercially. Rose had been busily videotaping the highlights of the shows in the tour which lasted several months, and traversed the entire U.S. She thought the concert would be a nice addition to her private document. It was only after the Steel Wheels tour did Rose convince Richards to commercially release the record. This was done partially because there were bootlegs of the tour selling widely, and also Virgin Records had signed Keith to do his second solo record Main Offender, which was scheduled for release in 1992.

Live at the Hollywood Palladium in the Stones Discography

The record is primarily a Keith Richards document- a live record of the Talk is Cheap album; although it has several classic Rolling Stones tracks, like "Happy" and "Time is on My Side", which is sung by Sarah Dash. "Connection" the song from 1967's Between the Buttons album was the reason why many bootleg copies of the concert were titled "L.A. Connection". It was the first time Richards ever performed the song live.
