Longmeadow is located in the Western part of the state, just south of the city of Springfield and is bordered on the West by the Connecticut River and to the South by Enfield, Connecticut. It extends approximately 3 miles North to South and 2.5 miles East to West. It is approximately 14 miles north of Hartford, Connecticut.
Longmeadow has a town common located along US Highway 5 , on the west side of town. It is about 0.75 miles (1.20675 kilometers) long. The town has three elementary schools, two secondary schools, and one high school. The commercial center of town is an area called "The Shops" that is very small, given the type of town it's in.
As of the census of 2000, there are 15,633 people, 5,734 households, and 4,432 families residing in the town. The population density is 669.2/km² (1,732.5/mi²). There are 5,879 housing units at an average density of 251.7/km² (651.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.42% White, 0.69% African American, 0.05% Native American, 2.90% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,734 households out of which 37.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $75,461, and the median income for a family is $87,742. Males have a median income of $68,238 versus $40,890 for females. The per capita income for the town is $38,949. 2.1% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
