Lotus Vauxhall engine

As they did a decade earlier with the Ford Kent engine, Lotus Cars modified an existing engine for their 1970s sports cars. This time, they chose a Vauxhall Motors straight-4. Introduced in 1972's Jensen-Healey , the engine would be the company's primary engine through the 1990s.

The first version was the 2.0 L (1973 cc) engine used in the Jensen-Healey and later Lotus Elite. Bore was 3.75 in (95.28 mm) and stroke was 2.725 in (69.24 mm), and a DOHC 4-valve head was fitted, one of the first in modern times. Breathing through dual carburettors, the engine produced 140 hp (104 kW) at 6500 rpm. Power was up to 160 hp (119 kW) for the 1978 Lotus Esprit II.

The 2.2 L (2174 cc) evolution was to become Lotus' engine of choice in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions.
