Lucjan Zeligowski

Lucjan Żeligowski (Lithuanian: Zeligauskas) (17 October 1865 - 9 July 1947) - Polish general. Married to Tatiana Pietrowna, had two children.

Born in Nieśwież . Son of Gustaw and Władysława z Traczewskich. From 1885 served in the Russian Army. Fought in the Russian-Japanese War of 1904-1905. During the First World War as a lieutenant he commanded a pulk of infantry. After the February Revolution in 1917 he was one of the commanders of the Polish Army in Russia. First he commanded a brigade in the 1st Polish Corps and in 1918 he raised Polish forces in the Kuban area.

During the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1921 he first returned to the main Polish Army through Odessa and Bessarabia with the 4th Polish Rifle Division ) (4 Dywizja Strzelców Polskich). A friend of Józef Pilsudski, he commanded the Polish Lithuanian-Bielorussian front, later the operational group and 10 Infantry Division. From October 1920 he commanded the 1st Lithuanian-Bielorussian Divison and staged a coup to take control over the city of Wilno, disputed between the Second Polish Republic and Lithuania. He proceeded to create a Central Lithuania state, which was soon incorporated into Poland.

From 1921 to 1925 he served as the Army Inspector in Warsaw, in 1923 promoted to the rank of general (generał broni) from 1925 to 1926 as Minister of Military Affairs. He supported the Piłsudski's coup d'état (the May Coup) and was soon returned to the post of Minister of Military Affairs. Retired in 1927, published a book in 1930: War of 1920: Memories and thoughts (Wojna w roku 1920. Wspomnienia i rozważania).

As a civilian he fought in the Polish September Campaign in 1939, aiding with his experience the command of the Southern Front. He escaped to France and later to Great Britain, where he was a membmer of the Polish Government in Exile (Rada Narodowa Rzeczpospolitej ).

After the end of Second World War he declared he would return to Poland, but he suddenly died on 9 July 1947 in London. He was buried on the Powazki Cemetery in Warsaw.

During his years of service he received the following orders: Commodore's Cross (Krzyż Komandorski), Silver Virtuti Militari, Great Cross of Polish Rebirth Order (Krzyż Wielki Order Odrodzenia Polski), Cross of Independence (Krzyż Niepodległości), four Cross of the Valorous (Krzyż Walecznych). From October 1920 a Honorary Citizen of Warsaw.
