Lucy Maud Montgomery

Lucy Maud Montgomery (November 30, 1874April 24, 1942) was a Canadian author, best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables.

She was born at Clifton , Prince Edward Island. She went to Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, in order to get a license as a teacher on P.E.I. Then, in 1895-96 she studied literature at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. There she - from the age of seventeen - worked for the newspapers Chronicle and Echo. She moved back to Prince Edward Island, after a time when she lived in Alberta with her father. First she worked as a teacher in island schools, the she moved back to Cavendish and lived with her grandmother. On Prince Edward Island she got the inspiration to write her first books. In 1911, after she married the Rev. Ewen Macdonald, they moved to Leaskdale, Ontario , where she wrote the next 11 books, before the family (now with two children) moved to Norval, Ontario in 1926. She died in Toronto in 1942 and was buried at Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.

Her major collections are archived at the University of Guelph, while the Lucy Maud Montgomery Institute at the University of Prince Edward Island coordinates most of the research and conferences surrounding her work. Volume 5 of her journals has recently been published by Oxford University Press, edited by Mary Rubio and Elizabeth Waterston.
