M2 motorway

Great Britain

The M2 motorway is a motorway in England. It runs approximately twenty-five miles in Kent, acting as a bypass of the section of the A2 road which runs through the Medway Towns, Sittingbourne and Faversham.

The motorway was built in the early 1960's, with J1 to J4 being extensively rebuilt recently (finishing 2003).

J1 - "Three Crutches" - Limited Junction. A2 Strood assessable from coast bound traffic / exit onto A2 London bound only. Junction was recently rebuilt recently (circa 2000?) for the Medway Towns Northern Relief Road (A289) - this is also limited; assessable from A2 coast bound and M2 London bound and, while exiting onto M2 Coast bound and A2 London bound.

J2 - A228 - Rebuilt very recently due to CTRL and widening. Access for Southern Strood, Cuxton , and Snodland.

Here the Motorway crosses the Medway with two viaducts (next to the CTRL) before climbing dramatically up Nashendon Valley.

J3 - "Bridgewood" or "Blue Bell Hill" A229 - Rebuilt very recently due to CTRL and widening. Access to Rochester and Chatham (A229), Borstal (B2097 ), Walderslade (A2045), and Maidstone (A229 leading to M20). J1 to J3 are 4 lanes wide each way.

J4 - "Gillingham" A278 - Access to Gillingham, Rainham, Wigmore and Hempstead. After J3 the motorway reduced to 3 lanes each way with a large median. The road widening terminates at J4, so J4 is still "original" and the rest of the motorway is 2 lanes each way. It is anticipated that when the A2045 (Medway Towns Southern Relief Road) is completed it will connect with this junction.

Services - "Farthing Corner" - Next to Wigmore.

J5 - "Sittingbourne" A249 - Access to Maidstone (South), Sittingbourne and Isle Of Sheppy (north). While the A249 (north) was extensively upgraded recently the junction has not.

J6 - "Faversham" A251 - Access to Faversham via A251.

J7 - A2 / A299 - A2 back to Faversham, Straight on is the Thanet Way (A299) to Whitstable, Herne Bay, Margate, Kent International Airport and Ramsgate and A2 Coast bound goes to Canterbury and Dover.
