Madison County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 14,019. Its county seat is Winterset, Iowa6. Madison County is famous for being the county where John Wayne was born, and for a number of covered bridges (see below). These bridges were featured in the movie the The Bridges of Madison County, which starred Clint Eastwood.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,456 km² (562 mi²). 1,453 km² (561 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,019 people, 5,326 households, and 3,925 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 5,661 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.57% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,326 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.90% are married couples living together, 7.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 22.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.10% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $41,845, and the median income for a family is $48,289. Males have a median income of $31,126 versus $24,095 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,357. 6.70% of the population and 4.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.60% of those under the age of 18 and 10.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
