Marian Otis Chandler

Marian Otis Chandler (1866-1952). Born Emma Marian Otis. Secretary of the Times-Mirror Company (publisher of the Los Angeles Times).

Daughter of Civil War soldier and Los Angeles Times publisher Harrison Gray Otis and Eliza Ann Wetherby, the daughter of a wealthy woolen manufacturer and sometimes minister who had opened the Wetherby Academy and named it for himself.

Marian had three sisters, Mabel, Lilian, and Esther (who died in infancy), and a brother (who died within days of its birth).

Marian married Times-Mirror Vice-President Harry Chandler (1864-1944) in 1894.

Their son, Norman Chandler (1899–1973), later served as president and publisher of the Los Angeles Times.

Their daughter, Helen was born 17 Feb 1907 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co, CA. She died 27 Dec 1968 in San Marino, California and was buried 1968 in San Gabriel, California.

Marian is buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California, not far from her father.

Named after Marian

The community of Reseda, California was originally named Marian, after Ms. Otis.

A freighter ship built in 1917 (originally named War flame, and later named Empire Leopard when torpeoded and sunk 2 November 1942 by the U-402) was bought in 1929 by the Los Angeles Steamship Co. and renamed Marian Otis Chandler, holding that name until it was sold again in 1939.
