Marilyn Milian

Marilyn Milian (born May 1, 1961 in Queens, New York) was a former Miami Circuit Court judge and is a current host of The People's Court. She is the first female judge to preside over the long-running "People's Court," and the first Hispanic judge to sit on the bench of any television court show.

Born to Cuban parents, Milian attended the University of Miami for her undergraduate degree and graduated cum laude from Georgetown Law School.

Milian worked as an Assistant State Attorney for the Dade County State Attorney's Office. She was hired for the position by Janet Reno, who was then the district attorney for the county.

In 1999, Florida governor Jeb Bush hired her to sit on the Miami Circuit Court. In 2001, she was hired to replace Jerry Sheindlin as judge of The People's Court.

Milian speaks both English and Spanish fluently, and is known to occasionally throw Spanish phrases into her cross-examinations on "The People's Court." (Examples: "Un clavo saca el otro clavo" ("One nail drives out the other") and "Sabe nadar sin mojarse la ropa" ("He's so slick he swims without getting wet").)

Some of Judge Milian's other catchphrases include:

  • "I wouldn't believe you if your tongue came notarized!"
  • "Stick a fork in me, I'm done!"
  • "Did I breathe and give you the impression I was done speaking?"
  • "Who am I gonna believe, you or my lying eyes?"
  • "You're either the dumbest person ever born or a bold-faced liar!"
  • "Are you picking up what I'm putting down?"
  • "Judge here!"
  • "I understand English, I just don't understand Italic textliars.Italic text"
  • "This is my favorite part. This is the part where I rule and you have to stop talking. I love this part."
  • "Not here, not today, and not in my courtroom!"

Milian is married to the assistant district attorney for southern Florida, John Schlesinger. He and Milian have three children.
