History
Marling School was founded in 1887 by Sir Samuel Marling , Sir Francis Hyett and Mr S S Dickinson . Its roots, however, lie in the inherited endowments of the Red Coat School which was founded in 1642 by Thomas Webb , the St Chloe School founded at Amberley by Nathaniel Cambridge in 1699, and the educational charities established in the 17th and 18th centuries by William Johns and Robert Aldridge . And if that wasn't enough, both the long and short corridors were World War 2 army hospitals!
Facilities
Marling School is currently undergoing extensive modernising and building work. The new sixth form block is now operational and servicing the students of the combined Downfield Sixth Form centre. Also, it has a new Design and Technology block following a fire that destroyed the former 'temporary' block in 2002. The block incorporates teaching rooms for food technology, Graphics, resistant materials and electronics. Other new facilities include the new music block, sports hall (otherwise affectionately known as the 'green goddess' after its color) and library. Other than this, the rest of the buildings look quite tired but plans for a new 20 class room, 2 story block look to change that.
Management
The Headmaster of Marling School is Roger Lock BA. The day-to-day running of the school is taken care of by the senior management team headed by Alyson Mills and Robert Reid. The school also has a Whole School Council (chaired by Alex Farrow) whose job it is to represent the views of the students. It meets termly.
