Martin (television)

The television show Martin aired for five seasons from 1992 to 1997 on Fox. The show starred Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell.

The show revolved around disc jockey Martin Payne (played by Lawrence), working at a rap station in Detroit called WZUP. His girlfriend was the long-suffering Gina Waters (played by Campbell), who, as time went on, became Martin's wife. Other characters seen were Martin's friends Tommy Strawn, (Martin's voice of reasoning) played by Thomas Mikal Ford , and Cole Brown (the obnoxious and idiotic friend who lived at home with his mother) played by Carl Anthony Payne II , and Gina's friend Pam James, who Martin constantly ridiculed, played by Tichina Arnold .

One of the most memorable characters was the walking stereotype Sheneneh Jenkins, played by Lawrence in drag. Sheneneh lived across from Martin in their apartment complex and factored into many of the sitcom's stories.

During the last few seasons of the show, Lawrence began abusing drugs and suffered numerous psychological effects as a result. Campbell sued Lawrence for sexual harassment, and subsequently left the show during its last season. Following the cancellation of the show, the two stars went on to have successful careers. Lawrence has starred in several high-grossing comedy movies and Campbell stars on the sitcom My Wife and Kids with Damon Wayans.
