Maure
The term Maure', since 11th Century, is used for the symbol of an African head or anything which is black and represents Africa.
The term has Phoenician and Greek origins; see Moors.
This symbol is used for political purposes:
- It is the main symbol in the coat of arms in Corsica, called U Moru in Corsican. According to AUF, in Corsica, a female Maure was used since 1281. Also used during the struggle for independence in 1736 and in Corsican currency.
- The Maure is the African Unification Front's flag and emblem.

Maure is also the name of a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques département in France.
