Hernández Martínez
(Redirected from Maximiliano Hernández Martínez)
Maximilliano Hernández Martínez (1882–1966) was the president of El Salvador from 1931 to 1944. An admirer of fascist theories, he seized power during a palace revolt, capitalizing on political unrest brought on by the collapse of coffee prices. His rule was characterized by a military government, suppression of opposition, and economic growth. He created a racial law to keep blacks out of the country.
In 1944 he was deposed by a general strike led by students, and fled to exile in Honduras. The revolt spread to Guatemala where Jorge Ubico was ousted similarly.
