Mbale
Mbale is an eastern Ugandan district in the foothills of Mount Elgon. It has an area of 2,466.7 square kilometres. Its central town is Mbale town, home to the Islamic University of Uganda.
The 2002 census found its population to be 721,242 and discovered that 92% of the population is rural. Therefore agriculture is the main economic activity. Some of the main crops are coffee, beans, Matooke (plantains), maize, onions, Irish potatoes (potatoes), carrots, and sweet potatoes.
Mainly populated by people of the 'Bamasaba' or 'Bagisu' tribe, whose language Lugisu is the one commonly spoken throughout this district.
Sironko district used to be a part of Mbale district.
