Mellieħa is a large village in the northern part of Malta. The population of the town swells in the summer with people from Maltese towns moving in for the season. The size that this tourist attraction village is however not high in population density. The latter being the biggest problem that is faced by the Maltese government.

The Mellieħa local council incorporates Malta's largest sandy beach, Għadira, along with several other beaches, making the locality a prime tourist location in Malta.

One of the more popular tourist attractions in Mellieħa, is the set of the 1982 film Popeye. A short drive away from Għadira, the set is a collection of various ramshackle buildings that made up the city of Sweethaven. The 'town' was originally built using several thousand planks, eight tonnes of nails, and 2,000 gallons of paint. To this day the set draws a considerable amount of tourism, with daily popeye related shows taking place for the tourists.
