The Metropolitan Council is a governmental organization in Minnesota made up of representatives of local governmental units in and around the seven county metro area (see Minneapolis-St. Paul). The council manages public transportation provided by the subsidiary organization Metro Transit, as well the BE Line in Bloomington and Edina. The group also coordinates the actions of local administrative committees that manage area parks and environmental regulations. The council also communicates with other regional transportation systems, such as that operated by the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA). Council members are appointed by Minnesota's governor.

The Minnesota Legislature created the council in 1967 in response to growing problems. There were more than 200 municipal agencies in existence in the region at that time, which made it difficult to coordinate actions. Additional acts of the legislature passed in 1974, 1976, and 1994 expanded the role of the agency, merging in Metro Transit and the local sewer board.
