Michael Lohman

Michael Lohman was a former Ph.D. student in the Applied and Computational Mathematics Department at Princeton University. He was a Baton Rouge, Louisiana native and a graduate of Louisiana State University, where he was the top mathematics undergraduate in 2001.

In 2002, Lohman was accepted into Princeton's graduate program. On March 30, 2005, he was arrested by Princeton Borough Police and charged with two counts of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of tampering with a food product, one count of harassment and one count of theft from a person. The charges stemmed from a two-week investigation by the Princeton Borough Police. The police stated that between 2002 and his arrest, Lohman deliberately and exclusively targeted Asian women for harassment. On several occasions, he would cut the hair of Asian women without their knowledge or consent. The police also stated that Lohman admitted to filling small plastic bottles with his urine or semen and then either spraying it on unsuspecting women or pouring the bodily fluids into their beverages when they were not looking. Police stated that Lohman engaged in over 50 acts of such harassment.

Excerpts from the Daily Princetonian :

"...Lohman, 28, cut and took locks of hair from about nine Asian female University students without their knowledge or consent and poured his own bodily fluids into the drinks of Asian female students more than 50 times, according to police reports...Upon interrogation, Lohman confessed to cutting the woman's hair and to cutting the hair of Asian female students at least eight other times, University communications director Lauren Robinson-Brown '85 said. All of the hair-snipping incidents occurred on campus, Davall said. Lohman also admitted to pouring his bodily fluids into the drinks of Asian female students on more than 50 occasions, Robinson-Brown said. The fluids poured into the drinks were semen and urine, Lt. Dennis McManimon, the Borough police's spokesman, said in an interview Tuesday. A search of Lohman's apartment revealed "a quantity of women's panties and numerous mittens," according to a statement from Borough police. The investigation, McManimon said, "has been leaning" toward the conclusion that Lohman stuffed the mittens with the hair he had obtained from students and used them for personal sexual gratification ."

Michael Lohman was barred by Princeton University President Shirley Tilghman from entering the grounds of Princeton. President Tilghman stated in an e-mail to the Princeton community: "I took the unusual step of barring Mr. Lohman from campus because the nature of his actions as we have come to understand them are not acceptable behavior on this campus, and are deeply disrespectful of the rights of others."

Some people believe that Lohman's actions were evidence of an Asian fetish. Michael Litchman , a visiting professor in Princeton University's psychology department stated in an interview with the Daily Princetonian: "Obviously [Lohman] has some extremely serious issues regarding interpersonal relationships, self esteem and socially acceptable behaviors in public. It may be that he does, indeed, like Asian women and may have been rejected by one or more, and he's angry and hurt. That's one possibility, but there are many other possibilities."
