Michael Mates

Michael John Mates (born 9 June 1934) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He is member of Parliament for East Hampshire .

He was first elected to Parliament in 1974, for Petersfield, Hampshire, and has represented East Hampshire since 1983. He has been a Chairman of the 1922 committee, and from 1992 to 1993 was Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office. He resigned after a scandal involving fugitive businessman Asil Nadir .

Mates's son, James Mates , is a senior reporter and presenter for ITN.
