Mike Del Grande
Mike Del Grande is a Toronto city councillor representing one of the two Scarborough—Agincourt wards. He first entered politics running to be a trustee on the Toronto Catholic District School Board in 1991. He lost that election, but was elected to the board in 1994. He has degrees both in theology and accounting and worked as a chartered accountant before entering politics. He was active in community organizations such as the Knights of Columbus and was the head of the Silver Springs Committee Association.
In 2003 he ran for city council against longtime incumbent Sherene Shaw Del Grande won in a surprise upset. The race was filled with accusations of ugliness with Del Grande distributing leaflets calling for an end to the "foreign" representation on council, which some read as an attack on Shaw's immigrant background. He was one of few right wingers elected in an election that saw city council shift to the left. In council he quickly became one of the leading critics of mayor David Miller. He also quickly became unpopular in the media. Globe and Mail report John Barber penned an editorial asking "Does anyone deserve a councillor like this one?" NOW labeled him as one of the council's failures.
