Milk stout
Milk stout is a type of stout beer containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable, it lends character and calories to the finished beer. Contemporary labeling standards prevent the use of the term today (except in Guernsey).
In 1875, John Henry Johnson first sought a patent for a milk beer, based on whey, lactose and hops.
Milk stout was supposed to be very nutritious, and was given to nursing mothers.
The best known brand is made by Mackeson's Brewery, and it is also still made in Guernsey.
