Modrus-Fiume

Modrus-Fiume is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary, autonomous region Croatia-Slavonia. Its territory is presently in western Croatia. Modruš (Hungarian: Modrus) is a small town near Ogulin; Fiume is the Italian and Hungarian name for the city of Rijeka. However, Rijeka was not part of the county Modrus-Fiume, but under the direct administration of Hungary. The capital of the county was Ogulin.

Geography

Modrus-Fiume county shared borders with the Austrian lands Istria, Carniola and Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Hungarian counties Zágráb and Lika-Krbava (both in Croatia-Slavonia). The county has a strip of Adriatic Sea coast. Its area was 4879 km² around 1910.

History

The territory that would become Modrus-Fiume county became part of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 12th century. Modrus-Fiume county was created in the late 18th century. In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon 1920), the county became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia). Since 1991, when Croatia became independent from Yugoslavia, the county is part of Croatia.
