Monroe Community College

The main campus of Monroe Community College it located in the Town of Brighton, proximate to Rochester, New York. A second campus, the Damon City Campus, is in Rochester. The college is associated with the State University of New York, also known as SUNY.

History and Culture

MCC was initially founded as a nursing school in 1962. Today, Monroe Community College (named for Monroe County, New York) hosts a diverse student body in a little under hundred differing degree and certification programs. The school is regularly updating its curriculum to add more programs.

At the main campus in Brighton, an estimated 50% of the student body are new students (students who have just graduated from High school, and are earning their associates degree before transferring onward to a 4-year university). The remaining 50% of the student body are returning students (Often KODAK or Xerox employees who have been laid off and are returning to school to refrsh their education.)

Many students opt to take a "2+2" program, in which they earn their Associates Degree in two years, then transfer to a nearby university (such as the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, Saint John Fisher College, Roberts Wesleyan College, Nazareth College, or the Eastman School of Music) to complete a Bachelor's degree.

The college maintains a regular newspaper, a radio station (closed circuit / web feed only), approximately 40 student clubs, eight public computing labs (the largest of which has 100+ workstations), numerous wireless 'hot-spots', a variety of dining and restaurant options on campus, and one of the few entirely enclosed college campuses. This last point is especially nice in the icey winter Rochester weather.

In 2003, a (relatively small) dormitory was opened on campus. The housing boasts modern technology services and a strong sense of community.
