Mount Pleasant is a city located in Isabella County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,946. The city is built adjacent to the Isabella Indian Reservation, on which land the Soaring Eagle Casino resides.

It is the home of the main campus of Central Michigan University.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.2 km² (7.8 mi²). 20.2 km² (7.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 25,946 people, 8,449 households, and 3,126 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,284.3/km² (3,327.2/mi²). There are 8,878 housing units at an average density of 439.5/km² (1,138.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.12% White, 3.67% African American, 1.54% Native American, 2.85% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.93% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,449 households out of which 18.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 25.9% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 63.0% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 11.5% under the age of 18, 54.1% from 18 to 24, 16.9% from 25 to 44, 10.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 82.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,572, and the median income for a family is $43,927. Males have a median income of $32,004 versus $23,869 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,177. 37.2% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.8% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
