Mrs. Winifred Banks
Mrs. Winifred Banks is a character from the classic book and film, Mary Poppins. Winifred was a member of Emmeline Pankhurst's suffragette movement, wife of Mr. George Banks, and the mother of Jane and Michael Banks. In the movie, Mrs. Banks was written to be a scatterbrained woman, often getting the appearance of being a neglectful mother to her children, by allowing her duties as a suffragette to get in the way. Her main outfit is a blue Edwardian-style dress with a white and blue sash that reads "Votes for Women". Her song in the movie is "Sister Suffragette". She calls her husband "dear" and "George". She lived during the Edwardian era of British history, in the Mary Poppins books and film.
Mrs. Winifred Banks was played by Glynis Johns.
Mrs Banks' "Votes for Women" sash (all four of the sashes actually) have somehow been recovered. One can be seen being "pulled out" of Richard M. Sherman's "special musicians' trunk" on the Musical Journey seen on the 2004 DVD release.
Mrs. Banks also was seen in the Broadway version of Mary Poppins, but was played by a different actress.
