Mulligatawny
Mulligatawny is an Indian recipe, of Tamil origin. The word in Tamil 'Mullaga' + 'Thanni' means "pepper water." It consists of vegetables and nuts. It is often seasoned with curry powder and pepper and is generally served with rice.
In Anglo-Indian cuisine it was adapted to be a thick spicy beef soup. It has remained popular, and is available tinned from Heinz. The fact that it is not vegetarian and there are many Tamils in Britain eventually led Heinz to add 'beef curry' to the label.
