Municipalities of Denmark

Denmark is divided into 13 counties (amter), and 271 municipalities (kommuner).

The municipalities listed below the county they are a part of (if any):

Bornholm (capital: Rønne)

  • Bornholm Regional Municipality has county privileges. It is comprised of the five former municipalities (Allinge-Gudhjem, Hasle, Nexø, Rønne and Aakirkeby) on the island Bornholm and the island's former county, Bornholm County . It was established on January 1, 2003.

Frederiksberg

  • Frederiksberg Municipality has county privileges and is a city in metropolitan Copenhagen.

København (Copenhagen)

  • Copenhagen Municipality has county privileges.

Frederiksborg County (capital: Hillerød)

Fyn County (Funen, capital: Odense)

København County (Copenhagen)- surrounds Copenhagen Municipality and Frederiksberg Municipality.

Nordjylland County (North Jutland, capital: Ålborg)

Ribe County

Ringkjøbing County

Roskilde County

Storstrøm County (capital: Nykøbing Falster)

Sønderjylland County (South Jutland, capital: Åbenrå)

Århus County

Municipality Reform 2004

As of July 2004, the government is in the process of reforming the regions (the Municipality Reform, Kommunalreformen). The 13 counties (amter) will be replaced with 5 new regions (regioner), while the 271 municipalities will be consolidated into around 100 larger units of at least 20,000 inhabitants and take over most of the responsibilities of the current counties.
