Muntinlupa was once notoriously known as the home of the New Bilibid Prison, where the country's most dangerous criminals languish. Nowadays, it has largely shaken off this negative image to become one of the most progressive cities in the country. Muntinlupa is home to some of the best malls in Metro Manila and is the location of Ayala Alabang Village, the biggest in the country and where many of the wealthiest families live. Among Ayala Alabang Village's residents include former President Fidel Ramos, the leader of charismatic Christian Group El Shaddai , Brother Mike Velarde . The Prince of Brunei also owns a residence in this subdivision.

The Alabang area of Muntinlupa City has played host to tremendous development in the past decade. In what used to be open fields and empty roads in the early 1990s, there now stands new shopping centres and office buildings. A large scale development called Filinvest was created in the latter half of the 90s, and now plays host to Festival Supermall, Manulife tower, luxury condominiums and modern office complexes. Many offices and companies have moved their operations from the crowded Makati City to Alabang in a transformation that closely mimicks that of Makati City 30 years ago.
