Murex trunculus is a mollusc, source of the royal Tyrian purple. The shell of this gastropod is very rough, adorned with spines. It prefers the warm seas.
The name Murex trunculus is no longer in use. It has become a synonym of Hexaplex trunculus, common name : Trunculus Murex.
