People's Commissariat for State Security (USSR)

The People's Commissariat for State Security (Народный комиссариат государственной безопасности) was the name of the Soviet secret police force existed during February 3, 1941 — July 20, 1941, from 1943 to 1946, and then renamed into the Ministry for State Security.
It was formed from the GUGB (Main Directorate for State Security) of NKVD. The Directorate then became a full People's Commissariat (equivalent of "ministry").
It was headed by Vsevolod Nikolayevich Merkulov.
