Nancy Hollister

Nancy Putnam Hollister (born May 22, 1949) is a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Ohio. She began her political career as a member of the city council of Marietta, Ohio. Later, she was elected mayor of Marietta. She was elected to the position of Lieutenant Governor of Ohio in 1996 as the running mate of George Voinovich. She briefly served as Governor of Ohio in late December 1998 and early January 1999 when Voinovich resigned to become a U.S. Senator. Hollister did not run for election as governor. In 1998, Hollister ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives, deafeating former U.S. Rep. Frank Cremeans for the Republican nomination, but she lost to incumbent Democrat Ted Strickland. She served in the Ohio House of Representatives since 2001. In the 2004 election she was defeated in her bid for a fourth term in the Ohio House by Democrat Jennifer Garrison, who ran to the right of Hollister, a relatively moderate Republican. A key issue in the campaign was Hollister's opposition to a measure that would ban same-sex marriages.
