Naniwa-ku, Osaka

Naniwa (浪速区; -ku) is a ward of the city of Osaka in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. It has an area of 4.37 sq. km., and a population of 51,567.

Although it is conveniently near the downtown Namba shopping area of Osaka, rents in Naniwa-ku are surprisingly low. This is in large part because, together with neighbouring Nishinari-ku , it has traditionally been (and remains) a home to much of Osaka City's burakumin population, the untouchable caste in feudal-era Japan, such that for some Osakans there is still a certain stigma attaching to a Naniwa-ku address. Unconcerned, and anyway unaffected, by such considerations, many foreigners choose to live in Naniwa-ku, making this one of the more ethnically and culturally diverse areas in the city of Osaka, and perhaps in Japan.
