National Highway No. 1 (Taiwan)

Freeway No. 1 is the first freeway in Taiwan. It begins in Keelung City at the intersection of Siao 2nd Road and Jhong 4th Road and ends in Kaohsiung City at the intersection of Jhongshan 4th Road and Yugang Road. The ROC government named the freeway as Jhongshan (Chungshan) Expressway in honor of Sun Yat-sen.

Lanes

The lanes in each direction are listed below.

  • 4 lanes:
    • Taipei IC. - Airport SIC.
    • Dingjing SIC. - Kaohsiung IC.
  • 3 lanes:
    • Yuanshan IC. - Taipei IC.
    • Airpor SIC. - Yuanlin IC.
  • 2 lanes:
    • Keelung Top - Yuanshan IC.
    • Yuanlin IC. - Dingjin SIC.
    • Kaohsiung IC. - Kaohsiung End

Expansion from 2 lanes to 3 lanes between Yuanlin IC. and Dingjin SIC. is currently under way.


Notes

There is 20.7 km viaduct on top of the freeway between Sijhih and Wugu. It was completed in 1997 to expand the capacity of the road.

The construction began in 1971. The north section between Keelung City and Jhongli City was completed in 1974. The construction of the entire highway completed in 1978.
