National Hospital for Paralysis and Epilepsy

The first hospital of its kind in England, it was dedicated exclusively to treating the diseases of the nervous system, and was located at Queen Square , in London. Officially named The National Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System including Paralysis and Epilepsy, it was founded in 1859. It later became known as 'The National'.

Great neurologists of the time worked at The National, including John Hughlings Jackson, David Ferrier, Charles Édouard Brown-Sequard, William Allen Sturge (discoverer of the Sturge-Weber Syndrome , and many others.

The hospital still exists as 'The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). it is part of University College London Hospital National Health Service Trust. It is associated to the Neurology Institute , a major research center. The Hospital also supports the Assessment Unit at the National Society for Epilepsy Centre at Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire.

The NHNN also runs The National Hospital Development Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting the Hospital for the funding of equipment, buildings and research.
