The National University of Singapore's (NUS) flagship campus is located in the southwest of the Republic of Singapore at Kent Ridge, bounded by the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), Clementi Road, Buona Vista Road and Kent Ridge Park, with an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometres.

One of the three universities in Singapore, (the other two being Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU)) the university was listed as one of the best universities in Asia by AsiaWeek magazine (now defunct) in 2000. In late 2004, NUS was rated 18th in a new global ranking of universities by The Times Higher Education Supplement published by The Times, one of only 3 Asian universities (the other two being the University of Tokyo and Beijing University) to be rated among the top 20. The university was also ranked at 9th position in the faculty-level ranking in engineering and sciences. NUS was also in the top 10 rankings for social sciences; the only Asian university to do so while in arts and humanities, NUS was ranked at the 19th position. In the Biomedic field, NUS was also ranked at the 25th position; closely behind Cornell University of US. With the university vision of "Towards a Global Knowledge Enterprise", the NUS strikes to provide a balanced, quality education, and to encourage scholarship at the highest level.

One of the most comprehensive university in Asia, NUS boasts a world-class infrastructure with 6 libraries, full wireless campus-wide, full sporting facilities, lecture theatres, halls of residences and various student activities that makes a fulfilling university experience.

NUS will soon be turning 100, carrying with it a century of rich heritage as a premier tertiary institution in Singapore. In celebration of this milestone, NUS will be holding a year long centennial anniversary programme beginning 25 June 2005.

History

The university traces its origins to the founding of The Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School in 1905, a realization of a dream by the city's founder, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, way back in 1823. Its name was changed to King Edward VII Medical School in 1912 and to King Edward VII College of Medicine in 1921.

In 1929, Raffles College was established to promote Arts and Social Sciences at tertiary level for Singapore students, and exactly two decades later, was merged with King Edward VII College of Medicine to form the University of Malaya.

In 1959, the University of Malaya was redivided into two divisions, University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and University of Malaya in Singapore. The latter division finally split to form the University of Singapore in 1962.

The present institution was formed with the merger of the University of Singapore and Nanyang University in 1980.
