Thanh niên Hành Khúc (1948 - 1975)

"Thanh niên Hành Khúc" was first adopted as the national anthem by the Provisional Central Government of Vietnam (Pre-government of the State of Vietnam. 1948 - 1949) on 14 June 1948, and it was inherited as a national anthem by the State of Vietnam (1949 - 1955) and the Republic of Vietnam (1955 - 1975). Incidentally, the words of "Thanh niên Hành Khúc" were revised by Ngo Dinh Diem in 1956.

First Version (1948 - 1956)

Vietnamese words

Này tanh niên ơi! Đứng lên đáp lời sông núi.
Đồng ḷng cùng đi đi đi mở đường khai lối.
V́ non sông nước xưa truyền muôn năm chớ quên.
Nào anh em Bắc Nam cùng nhau ta kết đoàn.
Hồn thanh xuân như gương trong sang.
Đừng tiếc máu nóng tài xỉn ráng.
Thời khó thế khó khó làm yếu ta.
Dầu muôn chông gai vững ḷng chi sá.
Đường mới kiếp phóng mắt nh́n xa bốn phương.
Tung cánh hồn thiếu niên ai đó can trường.
Thanh niên ơi! Ta quyết đi đến cùng.
Thanh niên ơi! Ta nguyền đem hết ḷng.
Tiến lên, đồng tiến, vẻ vang đời sống.
Chớ quên rằng ta là giống Lạc Hồng.

English Offical Translation

Youth of Vietnam, arise! And at our Country's call
Single in heart let us open the way; let us keep in mind
Our millenary history. From North to South, brothers,
Let us unite. Our young hearts are crystal pure;
Unsparing of our ardent blood, let our efforts increase.
No danger, no obstacle can hold us back.
Despite a thousand trials our courage is unshaken.
On this new road our eyes embrace the horizon,
Our soaring youthful spirit is undauntable.
Youth of Vietnam, to the very end! this we resolve.
To give ourselves completely, this we vow.
Forward together for a glorious life,
Remember we are the sons of the Lac-Hong.

  • Quoted from:National Anthems of the World (2nd and revised ed.), 1963.

Second Version (1956 - 1975)

English Offical Translation

O People! The country nears its freedom day.
Together we go forward to the open way.
Remembering our centuries of history,
Brothers from North to South reunite,
With hearts young and pure as crystal
Multiply our efforts and do not spare our ardent blood.
No danger, no obstacle can stop us.
Our courage remains unwavering in the face of a thousand dangers.
On the new way, our look embraces the horizon
And who can repress the soul of our youth?
O People! Going until the end is our resolution.
O People! To give all is our oath.
Together we go forward for the glory of the Fatherland.
We fight for the immortality of the Lac Long race.

Giải phóng miền Nam, chúng ta cùng quyết tiến bước.
Diệt Đế quốc Mỹ, phá tan bè lũ bán nước.
Ôi xương tan máu rơi, long hân thù ngất trời.
Sông núi bao nhiêu năm cắt rời.
Đây Cửu Long hùng tráng, Đây Trường Sơn vinh quang.
Thúc giục đoàn ta xung phong đi giết thù.
Vai sát vai chung một bóng cờ.
Vùng lên! Nhân dân miền Nam anh hùng!
Vùng lên! Xông pha vượt qua băo bùng.
Thề cứu lấy nước nhà! Thề hy sinh đến cùng!
Cầm gươm, ôm sung, xông tới!
Vận nước đă đên rồi. B́nh minh chiếu khắp nơi.
Nguyện xây non nước sáng tươi muôn đời.
