Nenetsia

Nenetsia (Ненецкий автономный округ) is an autonomous district of Arkhangelsk Oblast in the Russian Federation.

It has an area of 176,700 km&sup2 and a population of around 40,000; 18,000 of whom live in Naryan-Mar, the administrative center.

The Nenets language has official status along with Russian in the district.

Demographics

Population (2002): 41,546

Ethnic groups: Of the 41,546 residents (as of the 2002 census) 658 (1.6%) chose not to specify their ethnic background. Of the rest, residents identified themselves as belonging to 68 ethnic groups, including 25,942 ethnic Russians (62.5%), 7,754 Nenetses (18.7%), 4,510 Komis (10.87%), 1,312 Ukrainians (3.16%) and so on.
