New.Net
New.Net is a commercially run alternate DNS operation. For a domain to resolve, you require an ISP partnered with New.Net or browser plug-in.
A New.Net domain such as foobar.law is actually translated to foobar.law.new.net
Many consider new.net as a malware. In past, New.Net was installed with unrelated third-party software, without user's request and sometimes without user's knowledge. In order to achieve this, New.Net paid money to third party software authors, offering them $0.05 commission for each successfully installed plug-in. At least one version of New.Net also displayed pop-up ads. New.Net also redirects non-existed domains to a paid-placement search engine called Quick!.
Some anti-spyware tools, for instance Lavasoft Ad-Aware, remove New.Net.
Technical information
New.Net creates a DLL called newdotnetV_VV.dll (V_VV represents a version number). This DLL runs silently on start-up. All DNS entries pass through it. New.Net can be successfully uninstalled with standard Windows Add/Remove Programs tool. However, simply deleting the DLL causes internet connection to be broken.
