New Kitakyushu Airport
The New Kitakyūshū Airport (Shin Kitakyūshū Kūkō, 新北九州空港) is to be built offshore in the Seto Inland Sea on an artificial island in the south of Kitakyushu, Japan. The scheduled completion date is end 2005 or early 2006, with a predicted March 2006 opening.
The runway will be 2500 metres long, but as the island is almost 4000 metres it will be possible to extend it in future.
This airport will replace Kitakyushu airport which is too small and old for the city now. It is expected to operate 24 hours a day as it is offshore, and should operate charter flights to mainland China, Korea and Russia (Vladivostock). Six return flights per day to Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) are also planned.
Airlines expected to use the airport include Starflier of Kitakyushu, and Skymark.
