Newman (Seinfeld)

Newman is a secondary character on the television show Seinfeld. He is played by Wayne Knight.

History

Newman is a postal carrier of the U.S. Postal Service who lives in Jerry's apartment building. Because he is cunning and acts like a weasel sometimes, Jerry welcomes him in a sarcastic tone, "Hello Newman."

Despite this, he is friends with Cosmo Kramer, and at many times, both have participated in get-rich-quick schemes.

Since he is weasel-like, he tends to perform some annoying things like releasing fleas into the apartment complex, and assist other people to get back at Jerry (such as Jerry's barber).

Newman was initially introduced as Kramer's pathetic suicidal friend in the first season, but he was never featured on-screen. Instead, he was voiced by the show's co-creator, Larry David. Wayne Knight didn't start playing him until the third season.

Classic Newman moments

  • His truck caught ablaze, with him in it
  • Hated Keith Hernandez along with Kramer
  • Participated in the richshaw scheme with Kramer
  • Got a sample of Jerry's hair for his barber. While the barber was distracted by Edward Scissorhands, Jerry came to the barbershop & grabbed a electric razor to get back at Newman (Newman's reward for giving the sample was a year of free haircuts & using a comb)
  • Got hooked on Risk (boardgame) with Kramer (both thought they would take over the world if they won), until a native of Ukraine punched it in half (after Newman tells Cosmo that Ukraine is weak, near the Ukrainian)
  • Sympathizes with the Soup Nazi
  • Was used to decide who'd get a bike over Kramer & Elaine
  • Kidnapped a dog that barked a lot near Elaine's apartment
  • Was mistakenly called "Norman" by a woman from the country (Newman never had a first name)
  • Repeatedly attempted to kill himself by jumping from the building's roof but never had the nerve to see it through, despite Kramer's encouragement to "finally get something done."
  • Personally and harshly disciplined by the Postmaster General after involvement with Kramer's scheme to "boycott mail"
  • Was enlisted by George Costanza to deliver calzones to George Steinbrenner, but didn't perform the deed because of rainy weather
  • Planned a New Year's party to celebrate the coming of the new millennium (he says he first started planning it in 1978, and also booked Christopher Cross), but refused to invite Jerry. He mistakenly scheduled the party for the 31st of December 1999, missing the turn of the millennium by a full year.
