Nièvre is a département in the center of France named after the Nièvre River .
History
Nièvre was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the former province of Nivernais .
Geography
Nièvre is part of the current région of Bourgogne, although historically it was not part of the province of Burgundy, and it is surrounded by the departments of Yonne, Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire, Allier, Cher, and Loiret.
