Nick Carter (literary character)

Nick Carter is the name of a popular fictional detective who first appeared in dime novels in the 1890s. Novels featuring Carter continued to appear through the 1950s, by which time there was also a popular radio show, Nick Carter, Master Detective.

He was updated in a long-running series of novels published starting in the 1960s featuring the adventures of secret agent Nick Carter, a.k.a. the Killmaster. Well over 100 Nick Carter novels have been published over the last 40 years. This was possibly due to the popularization of the James Bond series.

The 100th Killmaster novel (appropriately entitled Nick Carter 100) contained an essay on the 1890s version and included a short story featuring the character. It marked one of the few times the Killmaster series acknowledged its historical roots.

Early Films Based on the Character

Actor Walter Pidgeon portrayed Nick Carter in a trilogy of films released by MGM.
